How can I discipline my child without spanking?

It is possible to manage your child's challenging behavior without spanking, hitting or otherwise using physical discipline.  We work daily with parents to help them respond to their children by creating clear expectations and following through with effective consequences.  As parents we all do our best, however we learned from our parents who were also only human, and many used the skills and tools they learned from their parents and so on.  The truth about hitting is that, on multiple levels, it damages your children.  While they may appear more obedient, the costs of hitting have been researched to be correlated with poor psychosocial adjustment, difficulty with peers, and use of violence in adult relationships.  At AHDC we offer a number of resources to help parents develop more effective parenting skills that will aid you in raising respectful, responsible and self controlled children.
