Myths and Facts about Domestic Violence

There is a significant amount of confusion, misunderstanding and stigmatism regarding domestic violence. Please read further for some common sources of misunderstanding:

Myth: Domestic Violence is about Violence and other out-of-control behavior.


Will couples counseling be effective if there is domestic violence?

In most cases, couples counseling will not be effective if these is domestic violence occurring. The premise of couples counseling is to treat couples problems - including communication and relationship issues.
What if my husband won't get help?

We work with many men who come to us without fully understanding that they have a problem. They often believe it is their wife's "fault", that she needs treatment, that couples counseling is necessary, or that treatment is not necessary.
Do you encourage people to leave abusive relationships?

We believe first and foremost in individual choice. We believe that it is not the role of a therapist to subvert this choice by either encouraging or discouraging a person to remain in any relationship.
Do you keep my information private?

The information you provide us is protected by confidentiality except where limited by law.
